Union minister Kiren Rijiju has said earlier that Gurmehar was free to speak her mind and added that his earlier comments were directed against the Leftists.
Rijiju said, "It were these Leftists who celebrated when Indian Army personnel were martyred in the 1962 (Indo-China) war and raised anti-national slogans. But now, whoever makes anti-national statements will be dealt firmly under the law. Everybody has freedom of expression but must act as per the laws of the country,".
Rijiju further added, "The martyr's soul must be weeping on seeing his daughter being misguided by those who celebrate the bodies of martyrs," .

Gurmehar Kaur has finally broken her self-imposed silence, giving insight into her mental state after being trolled for saying that war had killed her father, not Pakistan. She has written a blog with the concluding remarks, “My father is a martyr. I am his daughter. But, I am not your ‘Martyr’s Daughter." and posted on her Twitter handle.
